U Visa

The U visa is a humanitarian immigration benefit available to victims of certain crimes who have suffered substantial physical or mental abuse and have been helpful to law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of the crime. Qualifying crimes may include domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking, felonious assault, and other serious offenses. Individuals granted U visa status may receive work authorization and, after a period of continued presence in the United States, may become eligible to apply for a green card. A key part of the application is obtaining a certification from a qualifying law enforcement agency confirming the applicant’s cooperation. An immigration attorney can help gather evidence, prepare detailed supporting documentation, and guide applicants through this often lengthy and complex process.
